Sologarnacha
El Pastor y El Foro
Garnacha was the predominant variety in Rioja Baja until no more than 30 years ago. Arizcuren Sologarnacha aims to highlight the virtues of this variety in a specific location, the northern slopes of the Sierra de Yerga, and their suitability for cultivation. To this end, it works with some of the few old vineyards that still remain, seeking, on the one hand, to produce a representative wine and, on the other, to highlight the combination of a variety, a training system (goblet), and an area, namely the Yerga mountain range.
In this way, perhaps, the process of “desertification” of the historic Garnacha vineyards that once existed in this area can be reversed. The wine seeks to be an expression of the variety and the place where it grows, so no exogenous products are used in its production (except for a small amount of sulfur) and wood is used exclusively for the wine stabilization process, without leaving an excessive mark.
The grapes come from two vineyards with similar soil characteristics and age: El Pastor, at an altitude of 550 meters, and El Foro, at 600 meters. In both cases, the vineyards are between 40 and 60 years old, planted at high density in sandy soil with varying depths of clay.
