“the finest wines are moving away from pan-regional blends and towards individual villages and specific sites” Tim Atkin Rioja Report 2026

In his Rioja 2026 report, Tim Atkin clearly identifies a structural shift in the region: “the finest wines are moving away from pan-regional blends and towards individual villages and specific sites“. He further notes that it is now possible to understand the differences between municipalities when producers work predominantly with grapes from a single origin, citing Quel as a compelling example.

This year’s scores are not isolated achievements, but the direct result of that philosophy: historic vineyards, traditional field blends, high-altitude sites, and winemaking that prioritises identity of place through a contemporary interpretation of Rioja Baja.

Arizcuren has once again established itself among the most prominent projects in Rioja following excellent ratings in the Rioja Report 2026 by the prestigious Master of Wine Tim Atkin.

In this edition, Barranco del Prado 2023 achieved an outstanding score of 95 points. Sourced from a 130-year-old vineyard located at 770 meters above sea level in Quel, this wine—a blend of Garnacha with Calagraño and Tinto Velasco—stands out for its aromas of rosemary, pine, and wild thyme, its firm and earthy tannins, and a vibrant palate with notes of red cranberry, plum, and red cherry.

Also scoring 95 points, Finca El Foro 2023 confirms the potential of the region’s historic vineyards. This classic Rioja Oriental field blend, featuring Garnacha, Mazuelo, and traditional red and white varieties, offers aromas of lavender and subtle spice, along with a deep palate of blackberry and clove, showing a pronounced expression of terroir.

With 94 points, Sologarnacha Ánfora 2024 stands out for its floral and ethereal profile. Aged in amphora to enhance varietal purity, it reveals layers of wild strawberry, saffron, and delicate spice notes, supported by fine, elegant tannins.

Scoring 93 points are Sologarnacha 2023, expressive and fresh, with aromas of wild herbs and a vibrant red fruit profile; Solomazuelo 2024, perfumed and structured, with marked tension and acidity; and Solomazuelo Ánfora 2024, with a more earthy and profound character, fine-grained tannins, and great personality.

Completing the recognition, Monte Gatún 2024 receives 91 points—a blend of traditional varieties aged in concrete and large foudres, representing the winery’s contemporary style, combining freshness, structure, and Mediterranean character.

These ratings reinforce the winery´s work in reviving old vineyards in Quel and its commitment to producing village wines that precisely interpret the landscape and identity of Rioja Baja.
