“There are several prominent producers in La Rioja who already source their grapes mainly or exclusively from a single municipality, which allows us to understand the differences between them. A good example is Javier Arizcuren in Quel.” Tim Atkin report 2025
The Arizcuren winery has been highlighted by Tim Atkin MW as one of the leading producers in Rioja that is firmly committed to village wines, single-varietals, and single-vineyard wines, moving away from pan-regional blends and reinforcing the identity of the origin, with special mention of Javier Arizcuren’s work in Quel.
In his Rioja Special Report 2025, Barranco del Prado 2022 achieves an outstanding score of 95 points, coming from a century-old vineyard on a north-facing slope at an altitude of 800 meters. Tim Atkin highlights its Mediterranean character, with aromas of thyme, fennel, and wet stone, granular tannins, vibrant acidity, and a profile of deep red and black fruit, with remarkable aging potential.
With 94 points, Solomazuelo 2022 is a serious and structured Mazuelo, from mountain plots in the Sierra de la Demanda, with notes of black cherry, plum, wild herbs, and a firm and muscular finish. The Solomazuelo Ánfora 2023 version, also with 94 points, stands out for its more natural approach and no added sulfites, providing earthy complexity, tension, and a deep and unique character.
Sologarnacha 2022 scores 93 points, described as an intense, fragrant wine with great personality, with aromas of rosemary, oregano, and pine, and a structured palate of black fruits and salty notes. The same score is given to Apunte nº9 Rosé 2022, considered one of the most ambitious rosés in Rioja Oriental, with volume, gastronomic character, and refreshing acidity.
The report is completed by Monte Gatún 2023 and Monte Gatún Blanco 2023, both with 91 points, wines that represent the gateway to the winery’s style, combining freshness, aromatic expression, and a clear link to the vineyards of Quel.
